WHEN:  Saturday, October 27, 2007 – 9 AM until 3 PM.

WHERE:  Ocean Lakes Family Campground’s Recreation Building, 6001 South Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach, SC 29575  (only 160 feet from the Atlantic Ocean)

A great opportunity to speak with experts from the Smithsonian, collectors and to learn about this educational hobby.

WHO WILL BE THERE:

* Experts will be on hand from the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Natural History for free identification of your fossils! Museum Specialists from the Department of Paleobiology include Robert W. Purdy, Museum Specialist, Fossil Fish; David J. Bohaska, Museum Specialist, Fossil Whales; Frederick V. Grady, Museum Specialist, Pleistocene Mammals, and (tentatively schedule to attend):  Matt Carrano, Dinosaur Specialist and Mark Uhen, Whale Specialist from the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Natural History.

*  Many fossil collections will be on display by members of the Myrtle Beach Fossil Club,  and more.  The fossil displays will include shark teeth, whalebones, sand dollars, horse teeth and other fossils from this area.  Collections will also include fossils from the South Carolina Lowcountry area, North Carolina and Florida.

*Shell collections will also be on display at Ocean Lakes Nature Center Discovery Lab.  Tour the lab with our Curator, Leonard Raker, to see more than 10,000 shells and fossils.

ACTIVITIES:
* Learn how to recover fossils from the field with Smithsonian experts at our mock dig site on the beachfront at 11 AM and 2 PM.
*  Visitors will have the opportunity to hunt for sharks’ teeth in material from the PCS Phosphate Mine and then create your own shark’s tooth necklace!
